A major component within the Morristown Police Department is the Forensics Team. Supervised by Officer Brent Murphy.
The Crime Scene Technicians are responsible for the processing of major crime scenes. Their duties include collecting evidence, crime scene photography, checking for fingerprints and any other tasks that are associated with the crime scene. Officer Murphy is on call 24-hours a day and his services are frequently called upon. Officer Murphy oversees 8 officers who are assigned to the Forensics Team.
The Evidence Team is responsible for storing, cataloging and tracking all departmental evidence. The task is made easier with the use of a computer, where all evidence and evidence transactions are entered. The Evidence Technician also packages and transports evidence to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations Crime Lab in Knoxville, Tennessee for analysis on drug, alcohol and rape cases. Major crime scene evidence is sent to Nashville (i.e. homicides). When court cases are disposed of, the evidence technician are tasked with the job of disposing of the evidence. This is done by court order, and burning destroys the evidence.
The Crime Scene / Forensic Team is also responsible for the identification section of the Morristown Police Department, which includes fingerprint files and mug shots.
