Dr. Wilbur Gleason Ruble served Morristown as mayor for one term, 1921-1922. During his term in office, plans were completed for the construction of Morristown High School. He was born in Greene County, on March 17, 1874. His family later moved to Cocke County. He came to Morristown in 1905 to practice medicine, and married, in 1907, Ethel Lynn Murphey, the daughter of former mayor, John Murphey.
Dr. Ruble was a popular surgeon, and perfomed operations at the old Morristown General Hospital. He had two children:
His wife, Ethel was born September 22, 1882 and died February 24, 1971.
Dr. W. G. Ruble, as he was known, died on April 27, 1926. He had performed two operations that morning, and, after eating with two local physicians, he announced that he was not feeling well and had decided to go home and rest. His home is the current Mayes Mortuary on the corner of Main and Jackson Streets. There Dr. Ruble died, his family believing he had a heart attack. Dr. Ruble received the rare honor of having local businesses close their doors, and having the schools let out, so everyone could attend his funeral.
