- Make Sure to keep antivirus program up-to-date and do not let it
expire. Antivirus programs require a yearly renewal
- Update Windows often to make sure all the latest security updates
are installed.
- Stick to mainstream websites. If you're not sure of the name of a
website, type in keywords in a search engine to find the correct link.
- Do not use file sharing programs such as Limewire, Morpheus, Bear
Share etc. These programs leave your computer vunerable.
- Pop-ups that state "Your system is infected" and ask you
to buy a spyware detection or an antivirus program are spyware or
anti-virus programs themselves. If you continue to receive popup
alerts even after you decline the download, your computer is
probably infected and needs to be serviced.
- Do not open emails with attachments as a general rule. Make
sure your email client is not set for preview. This will automatically
open the email and the attachment. If you don't recognize the sender,
delete the email.
- Popups or web ads that have amazing offers or free merchandise that
seem to good to be true, ARE exactly that.
